Title:
Pavilion of the Holy See (Vatican Collection)
Location: Expo 88 Brisbane
Exhibition Design: Desmond Freeman Associates
Project Design: Rosemary Simons
Client: John Truscott
Design
Notes: Leaving a large ’nave’ relatively
free of exhibits gave form to the installation, provided changing
vistas and made reference to the criss cross pathways of traditional
basilicas.
Review: “....of
the other pavilions which I saw, the most impressive was, perhaps
surprisingly, the Pavilion of the Holy See... Alone it would
be a reason to visit Expo.” (Paddy Mc Guiness. Sun Herald
15/5/88).
Comments: “I
thought the ‘Treasures from the Vatican’ exhibition
at Brisbane was magnificent. It was an extremely difficult design
brief with formidable conservation and security problems to be
overcome. Rosemary took all these problems in her stride, and
the completed design was spectacular, with a series of dramatic
spaces and all attention focussed on the rich exhibits. It was
I believe, the most popular and most widely admired pavilion
at Expo and rightly so......” (Dr David Cordingly MA D.
Phil. FRASA Head of Exhibitions, National Maritime Museum Greenwich
London.1990).
