Title: Toolangi Forest Discovery Centre
Location: Main Road, Toolangi
Exhibition Design: Rosemary Simons
Client: Department of Conservation and Natural Resources

Design Brief: To educate the public on forests and their management as a natural resource.

Design Notes: To avoid competing with the real forest outside, or the architecture, a walk-through, stylised forest was constructed from local timber to fit within the strongly geometric lines and cathedral like volume of the building.

The exhibition commences with a forest ‘clearing’ backed by theatrical gauze and cloth borders representing the forest canopy.
Mounted on the wall as you leave the ‘clearing’ is a laser cut mural showing a section through a mountain and its forest types.

In the final area, harvesting of forest timbers is presented within a forest coupe. This coupe is represented by a screen of stylised trees in various stages of regrowth, at the centre of which is a ‘stag’, (a giant hollow tree), dotted with a variety of animals likely to find a haven there.

Architect’s Comments: “The finely finished trees of the exhibitory are knitted into the similarly expressed heavy braced building structure reinforcing the message of both building and contents.” (Peter Pass, Architect).
